Scouts take action on the environment
Nearly 400 scouts and adults took “action on the environment” as part of a Good For Nature community service project for Arbor Day weekend. They planted 3,200 tree seedlings of 12 different varieties at four area county parks – Seneca Park, Mendon Ponds Park, Ellison Park, and Powder Mills Park. These trees are replacing ash trees that died due to emerald ash borers.
Seneca Waterways Council teamed up with Monroe County Parks, New York State DEC for this project. Personnel from the County Parks provided scouts with an orientation and training prior to planting.
Good For Nature is a local initiative of the Seneca Waterways Council to engage scouts in community efforts that support environmental stewardship and protection of our natural resources for future generations. The Council’s Good For Nature initiative also supports the National Boy Scouts of America’s national Summer of Service initiative, which is designed to encourage the scouting movement to “give back” at a time when a spirit of community service is needed more than ever.
For the past 111 years, conservation has been an integral part of the Boy Scouts of America which has been at the forefront of teaching people, young and old, about the wonders of the natural world and how to be good stewards of the resources provided to us. More than 10 percent of all scouting merit badges offered focus on ecology and conservation education.
