Local church offering a peaceful, meditative space to help during holiday season
St George’s Episcopal Church in Hilton will be offering Taizé Prayer services on Sunday evenings during Advent. “We at St George’s Church are always looking to meet people spiritually wherever they are, to enable them to move more deeply into communion with God and thereby live their lives in greater peace and love. One increasingly popular way of doing this today is a form of prayer called Taizé,” said Reverend Greg Kremer.
Taizé Prayer (pronounced: tay-zay) is named after the ecumenical Christian community formed in Taizé, France, during World War II. Today the Taizé community includes those from all Christian denominations, including Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox traditions. Particularly attractive to young adults, over 100,000 young people from around the world make their way to Taizé each year to pray. Subsequently, Taizé Prayer has spread all across the globe. The music of Taizé is known for its simple, prayerful character that often takes the structure of an ostinato (a simple melody that repeats over and over), meant to serve as a kind of musical centering prayer. “Because Taizé music itself is intentionally simple, it is easy to learn and provides a great way to move our prayer from the head to the heart, helping us to dwell deeply on God’s presence around and within us,” according to Rev. Kremer.
Taizé prayer services will be held at St George’s Episcopal Church, 635 Old Wilder Road, Hilton, on Sunday evenings during Advent (November 28, December 5, 12, and 19) from 7 to 8 p.m. This sung, meditative evening prayer for all Christian faiths will happen in a darkened, candle-lit church and will last just 30 to 40 minutes. All are welcome to attend as they are.
