Area couple creates teddy bear adventures
Stryker Ostafew and his wife, Marilyn Ostafew, are a book-writing, photographing duo who can often be found out in nature in the Western New York region around Brockport, Albion, and Medina. They have written a series of books, geared to children in kindergarten through third grade, about two teddy bears that go on grand adventures in nature. Their first book, Bennington and Valentina Build a Snowman, is perfect for this winter season and their latest book, Bennington and Valentina Bears at the Beach, will have readers looking forward to warm weather and sandy beaches.
Inspired by the 1950s author and photographer Dare Wright, the Ostafews have used high definition photography and teddy bears to create their endearing outdoor adventures. Since they made their debut with Bennington and Valentina Build a Snowman in 2017, they have gone on to publish three more books to complete the Four Seasons Series. Their outdoor photography in the Iroquois Wildlife Refuge, cemeteries in Western New York, and in their own back yard is exceptional. They shot their latest book on location in Ocean City, Maryland, and on Assateague Island in Virginia. They currently have another bear series in the works with themes of mystery and film noir.
Originally from British Columbia, Canada, Stryker came to New York to attend college and met his wife, Marilyn, who is from Canton. They have been married for 33 years, have three children, and are both K-12 teachers. Stryker works in the greater Buffalo area and Marilyn in Brockport. When not writing and doing photography, they are active kayakers and hikers in the Western New York Hiking Challenge.
Their books are available at Lift Bridge Book Shop in Brockport, Rosenkrans and Lyric & Lizzy Boutique in Medina, as well as online at www.foxhillbooks.com.
