This local contest is part of the “Campaign for Cursive,” a worldwide movement promoting cursive writing instruction, founded by the American Handwriting Analysis Foundation located in California. The Foundation has designated January 23 as “National Handwriting Day.” That is the date of John Hancock’s birth in 1737, the founding father known for his bold, embellished, iconic signature on the Declaration of Independence. “Put your John Hancock there” became the expression for a person’s signature conveying his or her unique identity and affirmation on any formal document.

The Clarkson Historical Society expressed thanks the teachers who helped promote this in their classroom and all the parents and children who participated.
