In January, Monroe County 4-H Youth Development launched Save the Snowpeople, a challenge that encouraged youth and families to be active throughout the winter via outdoor explorations and activities in Monroe County Parks.
Participating youth responded to the challenge and became special agents on missions to save snowpeople – now an endangered species as climate change makes our winters warmer and shorter.
To complete the mission, county youth and their families had to complete five winter activities in five different Monroe County Parks before April 1. The mission challenges included building shelters, communicating with our feathered friends, finding hidden geocaches, identifying trees, and yes – building snowpeople.
Youth from around Monroe County accepted and completed the challenges, and submitted complete challenge checklists. Thanks to the Ontario Beach Park Program Committee and Friends of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County, five participants received $100 Wegmans Gift Cards or $100 in City of Rochester Public Market Gift Tokens in a random prize drawing. All participants that submitted complete challenge checklists received appreciation certificates from Monroe County 4-H.
“We’re thrilled and grateful that several dozen youth and their families from across the county accepted our Save the Snowpeople challenge,” says Andrea Lista, Executive Director of Cornell Cooperative Extension-Monroe County. “We can tell from the photos we received that many memories were made, and important things were learned in our marvelous Monroe County Parks all winter long.”
