Christopher Farnsworth, a 2005 graduate of Spencerport High School and son of Jeff and Donna Farnsworth, has received a national award for his professional accomplishments in the field of laboratory science.
Christopher Farnsworth, PhD, DABCC, FAACC, is an assistant professor of Pathology and Immunology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, and serves a Medical Director of Clinical Chemistry and Point of Care Testing at Barnes Jewish Hospital. He earned a degree in Biology from Roberts Wesleyan College and obtained his PhD in Pathology from the University of Rochester before going on to complete a Clinical Chemistry fellowship at Washington University.
The American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC), a global scientific and medical professional organization dedicated to clinical laboratory science and its application to healthcare, presented Farnsworth with its 2022 award for Outstanding Scientific Achievements by a Young Investigator. This award recognizes and encourages the professional development of a young investigator who has demonstrated exceptional scientific achievements early in his or her career. It is given based on the degree of originality exhibited in the individual’s creative process and the significance of the research conducted relevant to the field of clinical laboratory medicine. The AACC confers this award upon an individual who has the potential to be an outstanding investigator of the future.
Dr. Farnsworth’s clinical and translational research focuses on improving laboratory testing and patient care. His primary research interests are in cardiac biomarkers, biomarkers of infectious disease, and causes of preanalytical variability in laboratory testing. He has authored over 60 peer reviewed articles, case studies, reviews and book chapters. Dr. Farnsworth has been particularly active during the COVID-19 pandemic, assessing serological assays for SARS-CoV-2, authoring over 17 manuscripts and delivering invited lectures from numerous professional societies including AACC and The International Federation of Clinical Chemistry (IFCC). In 2021, he received the George Grannis Award for Excellence in Research and Scientific Publication from the AACC.
Those in this area may remember Farnsworth for his athleticism. He was a three sport athlete at Spencerport earning 13 varsity letters for playing soccer, hockey, and golf. During his senior year, he was selected to the high school All-America and Scholar All-America soccer teams by the National Soccer Coaches Association. He went on to play in 79 soccer games over four years at Roberts Wesleyan and was captain of the 2009 team that lost in the finals of the NCCAA National Soccer Championship.
Chris married his wife, Rosalie, in 2012 and they have a three-year-old daughter, Joann.
