Bergen and Sweden work to bring public water to more residents
The Towns of Bergen and Sweden approved an intermunicipal agreement on August 23 at their respective Town Board meetings that enables Sweden properties at the west end of Reed Road to tie into Bergen’s new water district. The mutually beneficial agreement allows Sweden property owners to become out-of-district users at the same cost as Bergen property owners, who in turn benefit from having more users pay towards the long-term debt service on the project.
The agreement had to clear hurdles with several agencies before being adopted. Eligible Sweden property owners have been mailed an application and have until September 23 to file it with the Town of Bergen. After that date, there will be a fee as well as the annual debt service payments. The debt service for Sweden property owners will be collected on the Town of Sweden tax bill and remitted to the Town of Bergen annually. Sweden has a similar arrangement with the Town of Clarendon for out-of-district water users on County Line Road.
