Brockport celebrates Arbor Day
Brockport held its 18th Arbor Day celebration on the morning of April 28 in South Avenue Park. More than 20 community volunteers, assisted by SUNY Grounds personnel and Brockport’s DPW, planted eight redbuds and two oaks. All the funds came from donations, and all the trees are native species. A bur oak replaced the giant copper beech that graced the lawn there for over 100 years, and a memorial pin oak was planted in a corner of the park. The Village intended to replace the copper beech with another beech, but were advised against doing so due to the invasive beech leaf blight which arrived in Monroe County in 2022. In time, the bur oak will attain a height of 70 to 80 feet and a similar spread of its crown. Bur oaks are tolerant of pollution, disease resistant, have very large acorns and can live 200 to 300 years. For more information on Brockport’s Trees, see https://brockportny.org/tree-board/.
