Hiscock-Fishbaugh American Legion Post 788 will pass out Memorial Day Poppies on Friday, May 26, and Saturday, May 27, at the Hilton Family Restaurant in Hovey Square and in front of Tops Market on South Avenue in Hilton.

On Monday, May 29, members of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6105 and the Parma-Hilton Honor Guard will remember their comrades with a flag-lowering ceremony at Parma Union Cemetery, 260 Parma Center Road, Hilton, at 8 a.m. Immediately following, a second ceremony will take place at the memorial flagpole in front of the Parma Town Hall, 1300 Hilton-Parma Corners Road.

The Memorial Day parade returns to the Village of Hilton on Monday, May 29, after a three-year pause. The parade steps off at 10:30 a.m. from the west driveway of St. Paul Lutheran School, proceeding west to Main Street, continuing to West Avenue. Marchers will turn on Henry Street, where the parade ends at the Hilton Community Center. Shortly after 11 a.m., when the last parade unit arrives at the Community Center, the Veterans organizations will conduct a short ceremony at the Veterans Memorial on the south lawn of the Hilton Community Center. After placing a wreath in front of the memorial, the Parma-Hilton Honor Guard will render a gun salute; the ceremony will close with the playing of Taps.

All events are open to the public; please maintain proper social distancing.

Civic or youth groups interested in marching in the parade should contact American Legion Post 788 at legionpost788@gmail.com or through their Facebook page @legionpost788. No political candidates or political organizations will be allowed to march; elected officials should contact Post 788 if interested in participating.

Honor fallen warriors in Brockport on National Poppy Day®, May 26
Remembrance Ceremony and Chicken BBQ on May 27

Honor fallen warriors and contribute to the continuing needs of veterans on National Poppy Day®, May 26, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Brockport Walmart when members of Harsch Crisp Seaman Post 379 of the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary distribute bright red poppies in exchange for a donation. The Flanders Fields poppy has become an internationally known and recognized symbol of the lives sacrificed in war and the hope that none died in vain. The American Legion Family called upon Congress to proclaim the Friday before Memorial Day as National Poppy Day, which was officially designated as such in 2017.

Wearing the poppy on National Poppy Day and throughout Memorial Day weekend is one small way to honor and remember our fallen warriors who willingly served our nation and made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

The poppy also honors hospitalized and disabled veterans who handcraft many of the red, crepe paper flowers. Making the poppies provides a financial and therapeutic benefit to the veterans, as well as a benefit to thousands of other veterans.

When the American Legion Family adopted the poppy as its memorial flower in the early 1920s, the blood-red icon became an enduring symbol of honor for the sacrifices of our veterans from the battlefields of France in World War I to today’s global war on terror. The American Legion Auxiliary raises about $4 million each year distributing poppies throughout the nation, with 100 percent of the funds raised going directly to help veterans, military, and their families. All are welcome to attend the annual Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony followed by a Chicken BBQ dinner on Saturday, May 27, beginning at 11 a.m. at the Brockport Area Veterans Club, 222 West Avenue, Brockport. Tickets for the Chicken BBQ are $14 each and only 250 tickets are available. To reserve tickets, call 585-629-1953.
