Twenty years ago, the Town of Sweden installed three outdoor basketball courts at the Sweden/Clarkson Community Center. The courts were funded in part by memorials in honor of former Sweden Supervisor Nat O. Lester, Jr. The basketball courts have been well-used but in recent years shifting in the pavement has caused the basketball hoops to lean.
The Town has decided to reconstruct the courts with some modifications to reflect the changing recreational interests of residents. One of the basketball courts will remain a basketball court, one will be converted into a tennis court and the third will be converted into three pickleball courts.
The Sweden Highway Department will perform some of the preliminary work and restoration. The Sweden Town Board has awarded a contract to Super Seal to apply acrylic surfacing and line the courts. Fencing will also be installed to keep activities separate. Reconstruction of the outdoor facility will take place late in the summer.
