The Town of Sweden will join with the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum to place a commemorative marker on the grave of Joseph Roby who participated in the Boston Tea Party. The event is planned for Monday, July 10, at 11 a.m. at the High Street Cemetery (located in the Village of Brockport).
Little is known about Joseph. He was the son of the Reverend Joseph Roby of Lynn, Massachusetts, and was 20 years old at the time of the Boston Tea Party, December 16, 1773. He is credited as “active in the destruction of the tea.” After the Revolution, he lived in Boston and Hanover, New Hampshire. He died on April 13, 1836, and is buried at High Street Cemetery which is owned and operated by the Town of Sweden.
The Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum has the goal of placing a commemorative marker at the grave of every known participant in the Boston Tea Party before the 250th anniversary of the event which will be December 16, 2023.
The July 10 commemoration at High Street Cemetery is open to the public and the Town of Sweden invites all who are interested to attend. Call 637-7588 for more information.
