Free colorectal cancer screening kits available

Cancer Support Community at Gilda’s Club Rochester is promoting timely colorectal cancer screening among men and women over the age of 45. The agency offers free Second Generation FIT Kits that aid in the detection of colorectal cancer, diverticulitis, colitis, and colon polyps. The FIT Kits (colorectal cancer screening kits) are non-invasive, easy to do at home with no need to mail them to a lab, and results are provided within five minutes. March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and the organization is sharing the message that colorectal cancer is “preventable, treatable, and beatable” when detected early.

According to the National Cancer Institute, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among men and women in the United States. It is estimated that as many as 60% of colorectal deaths could be prevented if all men and women aged 45 years or older were screened routinely.

“Cancer Support Community at Gilda’s Club has been providing social and emotional support programs for anyone diagnosed with cancer for 65 years. With these rapid screening test kits, we can be proactive with support before (and during) any diagnosis. Screening is important in detecting cancer early when treatment can be more effective,” stated Chief Executive Director, James Love. “Regardless of the result, the FIT Kits are not a substitute for discussing health matters with your physician or for a colonoscopy.”
