What’s it REALLY like to be on a school board?

School board races are taking place across Rochester area school districts this spring. Districts are in need of dedicated, qualified school board member candidates. What thoughts do current school board members have for possible future board members? Current local school board members from across the area gather together in an upcoming webcast to discuss their duties as board members and to share critical information with those considering running for school board.

Many people don’t fully understand the significant responsibility of school boards in governing a school district. Board members dedicate many hours to board meetings, training, and committee responsibilities. They must work collaboratively with their school district superintendent and fellow board members in the best interest of the district. Board member areas of responsibility include district policy, budget, and academics.

The webcast will explore how community members can engage in rewarding education service as a school board member that helps to shape school districts and makes a meaningful impact on the lives of students. “The Role of the School Board Webcast’’ will be Monday, March 25, at noon. The webcast is open to the public and will stream at https://ACTforEducation.org/.

Amy Thomas, Executive Director of the Monroe County School Boards Association, will facilitate the webcast. Panelists will include:
•Larry Davis, President, Brighton Board of Education
•Linda Dioguardi, Vice-President, Webster Board of Education
•Shanna Fraser, Vice-President, Wheatland-Chili Board of Education
•Dr. Christine Richards, Vice-President, Gates Chili Board of Education

All webcasts in the series are pre-recorded and streamed on ACTforEducation.org. Though the webcast is pre-recorded, questions can be submitted to the panelists through the live chat feature during the noon livestream.

Additional information on school board member roles is available in three video vignettes featuring current board members from Brockport, Pittsford and Victor at https://actforeducation.org/board-of-education-service.

All webcasts are archived on the ACT for Education website for future viewing. For more information about the webcast series or this initiative, please visit http://ACTforEducation.org.
