Flavored e-cigarettes: A hidden risk to our kids

New York State banned flavored e-cigarettes in 2020. However, these products, with flavors like gummy bear and bubble gum, still appear in stores and often attract teens and children who might not understand the serious risks.

This is not just about the continued availability of the flavored e-cigarettes despite the ban; it’s a call for stricter rules and public awareness. The ban was undoubtedly a positive move, but it’s clear that more must be done.

Matthew Myers, a leading advocate in the fight against youth tobacco use, puts it simply: “Flavors attract kids, and nicotine addicts them.” These flavored e-cigarettes can lead to lifelong addiction. Scientists also point out that these flavored products will interfere with brain development in younger users, possibly causing long-term health problems.

Now is the time for our state leaders to act to strengthen the ban on flavored e-cigarettes. This includes supporting robust enforcement of existing restrictions, having open conversations about the risks with our children, and pushing for a healthy future.
