Grant program showcases transportation history with fully funded historical markers

Communities across the United States are invited to commemorate their local and regional transportation history with fully funded historical markers from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation.

The Pomeroy Foundation’s Historic Transportation Marker Grant Program was established to help people bring greater attention to transportation history across subjects ranging from railroads, bridges and tunnels to canals and aviation. Markers obtained through this grant program must recognize a historical fact that occurred no later than 1945.

Markers help communities to preserve history, educate the public, encourage pride of place and promote tourism. Those interested in applying for a marker grant must submit an online Letter of Intent (LOI) to verify primary sources by Friday, October 4. Primary source documentation is necessary to support the proposed marker inscription.

Grants for Historic Transportation markers are available to local, state and federal government entities, nonprofit academic institutions, and 501(c)(3) organizations in the United States. Pomeroy Foundation grants fund the entire cost of a cast-aluminum marker, pole and shipping.

The final application deadline for the Historic Transportation program is Friday, November 8. For complete guidelines, eligibility and how to apply for a grant online, visit the Pomeroy Foundation’s website at https://www.wgpfoundation.org/history/historic-transportation/.

Additional Pomeroy Foundation marker grant programs also include Legends & Lore®, Hungry for History®, NYS Historic and National Register.
