Soup & Salad Day in Brockport

Offered by Building on Faith Ministries

Building on Faith Ministries will begin offering a free Soup & Salad Day lunch from noon to 1 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month, starting on January 15, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 14 State Street, Brockport.  Lunch is available dine-in only on a first-come, first-served basis.

Soup & Salad Day was originally called Soup & Sandwich Day. It began with Dawn Carpenter and Sandy Kramer wanting to make different kinds of soups. They decided to invite people over for soup and a sandwich. With two chefs in the kitchen, there was always plenty of soup to go around and even some left over to take home.

Before they knew it, they set up a regular monthly meeting. People began taking turns donating ingredients for the sandwiches while Dawn and Sandy continued making the soups.

To keep guests occupied while the cooks worked, Sandy had them assemble 85 Lowe’s wood kit toys she had collected over a two– to three-year period.  These toys, when completed, were donated to the Ronald McDonald House in Rochester, marking the beginning of a ministry.

Attendance grew, and they soon needed more space to feed everyone.  In keeping with God’s word, “I was hungry, and you fed me,” or “feed my people,” Sandy began exploring other options for additional space.

Through a series of events, Sandy and Sue Seidle found themselves at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Brockport, dropping off some donations, and met Rev. Elizabeth.  During that meeting, the offer was made to use St. Luke’s Church to feed the people.

Soup & Salad Day will begin at St. Luke’s on January 15, serving from noon to 1 p.m.  The first meal will be ham and potato with green bean soup, tossed salad with dressing, bread and butter, coffee, water, or juice/milk. The menu is subject to change without notice. There are no take-outs; dine-in only.

All are welcome to stop in for Soup & Salad Day on the third Thursday of the month to feed their body and soul with food, fellowship, and conversation around the lunch table. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
