•Kimbell, Margaret, died May 30, 2013 at age 95. Predeceased by her husband of 75 years, Blanton (Edward Blanton Kimbell). Margaret leaves behind her daughter Margot and beloved son-in-law Larry VanEtten, as well as two cherished nieces, Nancy Moss and Shirley Mitchell.

•VanOstrand, Christina Marie, Born in Vallejo, California, on October 27, 1981. On May 27, 2013, at age 31, Christina died peacefully in her sleep, to join her beloved grandparents, Gene Clark and Dollie (Clements) Clark. Christina was a loving mother to her children; who were her “whole world.” She had an incredible relationship with her mother Dollie, who was also her best friend. She loved to read and spend time at the zoo with the children. She often baked, made crafts and just enjoyed spending time with the children. Along with her husband, she loved to search out new and interesting recipes. Christina is survived by her husband of 12 years, Jason McCormick and by her four beautiful children, Samantha, Laurana, Claire and Deaghlan. She is also survived by her parents, Marc and Dollie (Clark) VanOstrand of Raymond, Washington and her in-laws, Gary and Lora (Roberts) Latimer of Holley; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, niece and nephew, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

•Bryant, Thomas G., June 11, 2013 at age 64. Tom left his loving wife, Nancy (Statt) Bryant; his devoted daughters, Alisha (Andy Farace), Katie Bryant, Jonelle (Matthew) Reiter and his cherished grandchildren, Angelina, Maximus and Olivia. He is also survived by his brother, Robert (Patricia) Bryant; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ray and Sally Statt; sisters-in-law, Sheila (Jim) Hill and Pat (Jerry Scheid) Statt; brothers-in-law, Dan (Terry) Statt and Mike (Chris) Statt; and many other treasured family members. •Heinrich, John L., June 11, 2013, age 79. He is predeceased by his wife, Lola Heinrich. Survived by sons, George (Janet) and John E. Heinrich; grandchildren, Jason Heinrich (Melissa Sage), Jennifer Heinrich (John Mosier) and Jessica Heinrich (Chuck Dinsmore); a brother-in-law, Edward Gable and a dear friend, Mollie Roy. John started Heinrich Collision in 1957 and starting towing for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department in 1962. He enjoyed fixing and restoring cars for 53 years and retired in 2010, passing the family business to his son, George. He was an Honory Memory of the Hilton Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the Rolls Royce Owners Club, and was the co-founder of the Hilton Apple Fest Auto Show.

•Hicks, William Allen (Major, US Army Retired), formerly of Hobbsville, North Carolina, age 80, died June 11, 2013 at his home. He was born September 3, 1932 in Elba, a son of the late Clark and Florence (Fay) Hicks. Bill served in the US Army from 1955-1975 and served three tours in Vietnam as a Parachutist and was awarded many medals for his service. He was predeceased by his son, William “Billy” A. Hicks Jr., wife Verna Horton Hicks; sisters, Bernie and Norma; brother, Fay Hicks who died in WWII. He is survived by his wife Arlene; daughters, Barbara, Deborah, Polly, Kathy, Monique; grandson, River Carrington Hicks; favorite nieces and nephews, Kathy and George Seltzer, Charles and Evie Butcher, several nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

Service for Richard (Dick) and Doris Costine of Spencerport June 22

Dick Costine owned Dick’s Hardware Store located in the Village of Spencerport from 1955 until 1979 when he sold the store and retired. Dick Kent was a long-time friend and employee of Costine’s. He worked part-time for Costine until 1969 and then full-time after that. He has many funny and happy memories of his time working at this store.
“We just got a new product, Kodak Superglue®, in at the store and Dick was demonstrating how quickly the glue dried. He accidently got glue on his hand and nudged a nickel that was on the counter. Well, his hand and the nickel got glued to the counter. I had to go next door to the drug store and get nail polish remover and use it to loosen his hand. I told him that he would have looked really funny if he had to go home with a counter attached to his hand. We kept the nickel glued on the counter, though,” Kent said with a laugh.
Kent remembers how he met Dick. Kent was working part-time at an ice cream shop in East Irondequoit and Dick would stop to buy an ice cream for himself and his dog. The two men soon became friends. Soon after, Kent moved with his wife to Spencerport and was coming out of the bank located in the Village of Spencerport and he ran into Dick. Kent asked him what he was doing in Spencerport. Dick replied, ‘That’s my hardware store,’ as he pointed to the sign that read Dick’s Hardware,” Kent explained. Dick offered him a job and this began a long-time friendship and work relationship.
“Dick was a good man, a good family man. He always took time to be with his family. He was frugal but a smart business man, he counted all the coins in the register. He would only balance the shop register once a week on Saturdays and would call me to say, ‘I counted the till and we are off three cents.’ Every Thursday, Doris would come to the shop to do the bookkeeping and their daughter, Suzie, would dust the shelves,” Kent said.
Kent shared another favorite memory.
“One time, Dick and I went to a hardware supplier picnic and they had games and contests. Dick and I entered a nail-driving contest. The goal was to see who could drive the nail into the board the fastest. Well, I won and Dick got second place. I won a gallon of paint and Dick won a t-shirt. I beat him and he didn’t like that. It was a quiet ride home,” Kent said with chuckle and a wink.
Kent also recalled how Dick was an active volunteer with Spencerport Volunteer Ambulance. “He was a charter member of the Ambulance,” Kent explained. Dick Costine joined the corps in 1966 and served for 15 years as a medic and driver.
Dick will be remembered not just as the owner of Dick’s Hardware Store, but also as a man who was devoted to his family, a community volunteer and a man who was a thoughtful and considerate employer.
Dick Costine died in late 2012 and his wife, Doris, died just six weeks later. The couple became members of Parma Baptist Church in 1962 and faithfully attended worship every Sunday that they were not in Florida. In early years, Doris sang soprano in the church choir and was active in Friendship Class, served as a deacon, was a member of the Flower Committee, and, along with Dick, helped with chicken barbecues.
Dick Costine served in the United States Air Force in the South Pacific with the USAF PBY Air-Sea Rescue Group. Their mission was to rescue those gun-downed at sea who were able to make it to a life raft. After active service Dick continued in the Reserves for 18 years and retired as a Captain.
Doris and Dick married in 1945 in Rochester – a Parma Baptist church congregation record states that a local seamstress made Doris’ wedding dress from a silk parachute – obtained by Dick for $25.
Doris worked as a secretary receptionist at Metal Arts Company in Rochester. During the war she worked as a statistical typist at Ritter Dental Company. She was a homemaker who raised two children and enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting and, in her early years, playing the flute. She also enjoyed bowling and golf and played frequently at Churchville Golf Course.
Dick’s Hardware was originally located in a building on the east side of Union Street and relocated in a former bank building on the west side of Union Street in the village. He retired in 1979 and sold the business. He was a pilot of small air craft, enjoyed coin collecting, playing baseball (well into his 80s in an Old Timer’s league), bowling and maybe most of all, fishing. Travelers on the Spencerport lift bridge over the Erie Canal could often see him in his favorite fishing spot near the bridge. He used solunar charts to determine the best fishing times. Asked to document his catch for Suburban News, he reported: “On one fishing expedition last June (2008), the best time started at 6:04 p.m., adjusted for the time zone location that was 6:16 p.m. The fish bit at 6:20 p.m. It was a small rock bass that took the crawfish bait. … The window for the best fishing on the canal is about 20 minutes from the predicted starting time,” Costine said. His best catch? The then 85-year-old had been fishing “for 80 years. Back in Massachusetts I got a 21” brown trout in the Deerfield River!”
On July 19, 2009, he recorded the following Erie Canal catch: one 8 to 10 pound carp, one 19 inch catfish, one 15 inch sucker, two 11 inch black bass, one sheepshead. On July 25 of that year, he recorded: one 14.5 inch black bass, one small mouth bass, two rock bass, one 12 inch catfish, one 16 inch two pound small mouth bass.
In their retirement years, the couple lived six months of the year in Clearwater, Florida, They had two children, Bill Costine, now deceased, and Sue (Fred) McKnight, and two grandchildren, Betsy (Bob) Moody and Chris McKnight.
A graveside service will be held June 22 at 11 a.m. at Parma Corners Cemetery near the corner of Ridge Road West and Union Street. A reception follows at Parma Baptist Church, 4997 Ridge Road West, Spencerport. Contributions can be made to Parma Baptist Church Memorial Fund in their memory.
