OBITUARIES – WEEK OF JULY 14, 2013

AREA/SOUTH BEND, IN.

•Harrington, Judith, July 4, 2013. Judy was a long time resident of Brighton, NY, who moved to South Bend, Indiana in 2011 to be close to her daughter, Susan. Judy attended Cornell University and married a college classmate, Ronald Vern Harrington in 1954. Judy was a Classics major at Cornell. She added a second major in English, graduating cum laude at age 20. Education, language, books and libraries were central to her life. Ron and Judy moved to the DC area, where Judy was a librarian at the Library of Congress while Ron worked at the National Security Agency. The family moved from Washington, DC, to Cambridge, Massachusetts, then to Maryland and back to Cambridge where Ron got his Ph.D., and finally to Brighton in 1964, when Ron became professor of Russian and Linguistics at the University of Rochester.

In the late 1960s, Judy went back to school at SUNY Geneseo to get her Masters of Library Science. She was a librarian in the Spencerport schools for many years. Fascinated by the early development of computer cataloguing in the 1980s, she became a library automation expert and taught beginning computer programming during the summers. Her husband, Ron, died in 1993. Retirement in 1994 from Spencerport did not end her career; in 1995, Judy moved to Austria for two years to work as librarian at the Vienna International School.

Upon returning to Brighton, Judy volunteered as a docent at the Rochester Museum and Science Center, working on cataloguing the Albert Stone collection of early Rochester photographs and then was hired as a part-time liberian there.

Throughout her life, Judy learned many languages: Latin and Greek at Cornell, Russian when Ron was required to speak only Russian for his education, German while living in Austria. She had passion for poetry, reading, gardening, bird-watching, computers, weather and virtually anything else that appealed to her intellect.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Charles Ginsberg, and her husband, Ron. She is survived by her son, Philip (Susan Reynolds) Harrington of St. Louis, Missouri; daughter, Susan (Roberto) Enamorado of New Carlisle, Indiana; son, Joel (Julie Atkinson) Harrington of Redwood City, California and eight grandchildren.

A Memorial Service is tentatively planned for September 28 in Rochester. To send condolences to the family, visit www.McGannHay.com.
