Betty Sherwood Genter
•Genter, Betty Sherwood, Albion, age 79 of Brown Road, died 4/11/2015 in the Martin Linsin Hospice Residence following a long illness.
She was born 10/16/1935 in Clarendon to Raymond and Gladys(Bowen)Sherwood and was a lifetime resident of this area. Betty attended a one-room school house in Manning. After graduating from Holley High School, she attended Brockport State College where she received her Bachelor’s Degree, followed by her Master’s Degree, and began teaching fifth grade in Albion at the age of 20. She served Albion Central School District for thirty-four years; first as an elementary teacher, then as Reading Coordinator, Assistant Superintendent, Director of Elementary Education and finally principal of two different elementary schools. Betty led a very full life with a love of children, teaching, and traveling. She was also an artist, writer and illustrator. In 2001, Betty illustrated Memories of Manning by a schoolmate, Roy Bubb. In 2003 she wrote and illustrated her first book, Growing up on a Clarendon Muckland Farm, later re-titled Life: The Way It Was. She also published My Ma Ma, Whatever Happened to Eddie Stone? And Restoring Cobblesone A Lost Art. Betty was a member of Holy Family Parish, where she served on the Parish Council, on the Religious Education Committee, and the Vicariate of Orleans County, as well as a volunteer with Genesee/Orleans Ministry of Concern. She was also a 4-H Leader, served on the Board of Directors for the Red Cross, and was a member of the Clarendon Historical Society.
Betty was predeceased by infant brother Gordon. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Adolf; loving children, Joseph (Buffy) Genter, Alexandra (Kevin) Andrews, as well as six long-term foster children; Grandson Bowen Andrews, Expected Grandson Clement Genter, Step Grandchildren: Harold, Marshall, and Jordan Dorrity; sister, Joyce Bell; brother, Carl (Barbara) Sherwood; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends.
The family will receive friends at the Christopher Mitchell Funeral Homes, Inc. 21 West Avenue-Albion, THURSDAY from 4-7 pm. Family and friends are invited to attend Betty’s Mass of Christian Burial in Holy Family Parish FRIDAY beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Holy Family Parish, 106 S. Main Street, Albion, NY, 14411 or Hospice of Orleans, 14090 Route 31 W, Albion, NY 14411.
