Norman John “Norm” Weinreber
Greece/Chili: Passed away on July 8, 2016 at age 92, comfortably and peacefully in hospice care and surrounded by his family. He is immediately survived by his beloved wife of 71 years, Lyla R. Weinreber; children, Roger (Mary) Weinreber of Gold Canyon, AZ & Judy (George) Coolbaugh of Conesus Lake, NY; grandsons Daniel S. (Marisa Dewa) Weinreber, Stephen P. (Nicole) Coolbaugh, and Marc A. (Aundrea) Weinreber ; and ten great-grandchildren.
Norm was a kind, wise gentleman of the old school. World War II veteran; a combat medic, he was awarded a Silver Star and two Bronze Stars with the Timberwolves of the 104th Infantry Division. Following his Army service, Norm returned home, married his sweetheart, moved to the Rochester area, earned his Bachelor’s & Master’s degrees from Rochester Institute of Technology, and raised his family. Norm worked as a mechanical engineer at several Rochester companies before finding his true calling as a professor of Mechanical Engineering at RIT. One of his greatest pleasures was watching former students succeed in their own careers. He retired from RIT in 1979. He was an unrepentant tinkerer and fixer of things that would not work. Norm’s family, friends, colleagues and former students will always remember, and deeply miss, his giving spirit, his wry sense of humor, his absolute desire to serve others before himself, and his quiet example for all who knew him.
As Norm wished, there will be no calling hours. Interment will be at the convenience of his family. A celebration of Norm’s life will be held in the future at the convenience of the family. Donations in his memory may be made to the Hildebrandt Hospice Care Center, or to the United Methodist Church of North Chili.
