John Douglas (Doug) Hickerson

BROCKPORT – John Douglas (Doug) Hickerson, recently of Toano, Virginia, longtime resident of Brockport, passed away on October 21, 2020.  He is survived by his wife, Dianne; children Anne (Chris) Jay, Alice (Greg) Schaaf, Cherie (Greg) Wage, Tim (Debbie) Cretney, and grandchildren Ryann, T.J., Brennan, Alec, Thomas, Danny, John, Megan, and William. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alice Johnson Hickerson and John Edwin Hickerson, and his sister, Joan Stoeckinger.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, his education culminated in a Master’s of Divinity and a PhD in education. His 35-year career in higher education administration took him to Pennsylvania, Michigan, Kentucky, and back to New York. While building (and adding to) a home for himself and Dianne in Brockport, he taught his children and grandchildren everything from planning to power tools. His most gratifying career was writing human interest stories, compiling over 200 for local papers, including Suburban News and Hamlin-Clarkson Herald. He delighted in Dianne’s art; keeping up with his extended family and friends; home improvement projects; and being part of his church community. His faith was strong and carried him throughout his life. Philippians 4: 4-8.

A prayer service was held in Virginia for immediate family; a memorial service is planned for a future date in Brockport. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Lollypop Farm (www.lollypop.org), Western Monroe Historical Society (www.westernmonroehistoricalsociety.org), or Riverside Foundation (https://donatenow.networkforgood.org/riverside).
