Jack R. Rollwagen, Ph.D

Jack R. Rollwagen, Ph.D., died August 20 following a brief illness. He was predeceased by his wife Louise Stein and is survived by his children from a prior marriage: Mark, Matthew, Valerie and Julie (Reggie) Reed, grandchildren Sylvia McKenna and Isabella Reed and good friends Brian and Kathy Fox. Jack was born in 1935 and raised in Aurora, Colorado. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Oregon (1968) and, following teaching positions in Berkeley, CA and Washington, DC, started at The College at Brockport (1970) where he taught in the Department of Anthropology as a full professor. A cultural anthropologist, his specialties were World System Analysis, World Poverty and Economic Underdevelopment, and Visual Anthropology. He was founder (1972), editor and publisher (1972-recent) of the internationally distributed quarterly journal “Urban Anthropology.” He also founded the “Society for Urban Anthropology” (1979), and became its first president (1979-1980). He edited two books: “Anthropological Filmmaking” (1988) and “Anthropological Film and Video” (1993). He was a Fulbright Teaching Fellow at Shandong University, Jinan, China (1998-1999), and over the first decade of 2000 produced two series of Anthropological Films: “Song of the Grasslands” about traditional music of Mongolia, China, and “Life In an American Village” about aspects of life in Brockport. Following retirement from the College (2006), he remained active with the journal and video projects.
