OMS students learn about food and kitchen safety
Pam Leverenz, cook manager at the A.D. Oliver Middle School took sixth graders in Kathy Rhodes’ Family and Consumer Science class through how the food is handled safely from the moment it arrives at school until it is consumed.
During the lesson and tour through the middle school kitchen and storage room, she talked about food storage, cross contamination and perishable foods. Students learned how to keep work areas free from dirt and bacteria and how to keep food safe with the four actions of clean, separate, chill and cook.
The lesson corresponded with their Kitchen Safety unit and kicks off their Foods Lab unit where they will prepare, clean up and sample their food items.
