Starting a chain reaction at Churchville-Chili
“I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same. People will never know how far a little kindness can go.”
These words were merely a part of an essay written by Rachel Scott but became the catalyst for kindness after her death during a shooting at her high school over a decade ago. Her words resonated throughout the Churchville-Chili Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, October 23 as part of Rachel’s Challenge presentations for grades 5 through 12.
Program presenter Michael Dorsey shared stories about Scott, ways she impacted lives of those around her and how students can put her examples into action in their schools. Through Rachel’s Challenge, Dorsey encouraged students to look for the best in others, dream big, choose positive influences, speak with kindness and, most of all, start their own chain reaction.
Students from each grade level were selected and invited to participate in the formation of a Friends of Rachel (FOR) Club. This unique program provides the opportunity for C-C to partner with Rachel’s Challenge to continue the chain reaction of kindness and compassion in the schools and community. The main goal of the club is to help create a permanent cultural change in a school. Following the morning presentation to the high school, Dorsey held a private session with the FOR Club members where students shared personal stories and collaborated on ideas to spread kindness throughout the school community.
