Byron-Bergen students honor local veterans
Byron-Bergen high school students participated in a full day program honoring local veterans on November 8. The annual event was planned and coordinated by members of the Byron-Bergen National Honor Society along with faculty advisors Amy Knell and Alana Parnapy.
The day began with student Leah Catalino singing the “National Anthem” over the loudspeaker. Science Teacher Jeff Parnapy then read an inspirational statement from John F. Kennedy recognizing the significance of Veterans Day: “Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and success of liberty. As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words but to live by them.”
The participating veterans spent the morning leading history classes, speaking with students, and answering many questions. Honored guests included: Doug Coveney – United States Coast Guard, 1976-2006, David Keller – United States Army, 1975-2009, Harold McJury – United States Navy, 1969-1973, Chad Buckland – United States Air Force 1990-1994.
The program continued with lunch and a performance by student choral group, the Singing Silhouettes. Members of the National Honor Society then recognized each veteran and presented them with tokens of appreciation. The Veteran’s Day observance concluded with a statement read by student Brittany Merrell and a moving rendition of “Taps,” played by Elizabeth Ezard and Matt Hilbert over the loudspeaker.
