Byron-Bergen kindergarteners greet the holiday with carols at Gillam-Grant
Kindergarten classes at Byron-Bergen Elementary are learning about other world cultures and traditions, starting with how children around the world celebrate holidays like Christmas and Hanukkah. They shared the English tradition of caroling with an enthusiastic audience on December 13 at the Gillam-Grant Community Center. The group was introduced by organizer and teacher Melissa Chamberlain, who was assisted by fellow teachers from the Elementary School Jane Darocha, Lori Simmons, and Shana Feissner. The performers, dressed in red and green and wearing elf hats with their name drawn in gold glitter, sang favorites like “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” “Jingle Bells,” and “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.”
“Caroling is a holiday tradition for Byron-Bergen’s kindergarteners, who have been performing for schoolmates, family, and the community for over 20 years,” says their accompanist Marsha MacConnell, who taught kindergarten at Byron-Bergen for many of those years. “It is a wonderful time for them to work together, to practice, and to discover their musical talents.” As fun as the performance is, it is just part of a large learning experience. The children explore diversity and holidays from many countries including Germany, China, France, Italy, and Mexico and practice art, music, reading and writing skills.
“We’re so lucky to have had the support of Gillam-Grant Community Center, which invited us to perform several years ago and has hosted us ever since,” says Assistant Principal Amanda Cook. “They are a great partner and a wonderful asset for our community.”
