A variety of live arts performances are planned during Spring Semester 2014 at Genesee Community College. Featured performers include a gospel singer and a well-known comedian. GCC’s Forum Players Theatre Company plans a special event in February to celebrate black history, and in April the Forum Players Children’s Theatre presents “Tales from Japan.” All events will be held at the Genesee Center for the Arts Stuart Steiner Theatre. De’juaine G. Motley, affectionately known as D’Mott, kicks off the season on Friday, January 31 at 7:30 p.m. D’Mott pastors the Remnant House Outreach Church in Buffalo. Surrounded by church and gospel music all his life, he began playing drums at a church his grandparents founded. The Forum Players Theatre Company of Genesee Community College will present A Celebration of Black History Friday and Saturday, February 21 and 22 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, February 23 at 2 p.m. This multi-arts event takes the stage in celebration of Black History Month and features a collage of songs, dance, poetry, monologues and a one act play celebrating the achievements of black Americans and recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. Excerpts from Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech and Reverend Jesse Jackson’s “Rainbow Coalition” will be included. This event promises to both excite and educate audiences of all ages while leaving many memorable and magical moments. Tickets are $8. Seniors and GCC faculty/staff are $5. The third annual Fine Arts Festival is scheduled Thursday, April 3 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. and offers numerous free workshops demonstrating creative endeavors such as drawing, painting, photography, origami, printmaking and much more. The annual event highlights Genesee’s Fine Arts program and gives people of all ages the opportunity to explore different artistic media and also meet GCC’s faculty in the fine arts and photography.
The season culminates in April with Tales from Japan Friday-Sunday, April 25-27. The Forum Players Children’s Theatre presents a collection of traditional Japanese tales, where treasure is discovered in unexpected places, even the most unassuming characters are heroes, and beauty is found in all aspects of nature. From an old woman using her wisdom and wit to save a kingdom from tyranny, to a peach boy defeating the village monster, these stories bring to life the subtle and surprising aspects of Japanese culture. The Roz Steiner Art Gallery will have three exhibitions this spring. Leigh Yardley’s “Interactions of Time and Substance” will be on display January 13 – February 28. GCC Fine Arts Student exhibition will run March 17 – April 11, and the Student Digital Art Exhibit runs April 17 – May 14.
