Hilton students model their own fashions; receive tips from former Miss USA

Students in Carol Cowan’s Fashion Clothing class at Hilton High School had their moment in the spotlight after weeks of hard work sewing their own clothing. The students studied the elements of design, color, sewing machine operation, patterns and textiles, and then took a field trip to pick out patterns and fabric before beginning their projects.

Sophomore Lindsey Keller said she’s loved fashion ever since she was little and wanted to learn more about sewing. She made a skirt out of sparkling fabric that she can wear for special occasions.

Junior John Saulter said that while it’s unusual for a guy to take the course, he wanted to learn a useful skill. “It was a good class and the teacher is fair,” he said.

The fashion show has been held twice a year, in January and June, for the past 19 years. Mary Therese Friel, former Miss USA and Ford model, along with her husband Kent, take time to work with students on presentation, posture and walking the “runway,” then help judge the students on their presentations and award prizes. “This group of students was especially hard working and great to work with,” she said. Students receive extra credit for participating in the fashion show. When judging, the Friels say they always take into consideration a student’s inner beauty.

While everyone enjoyed refreshments made by the Child Development II class, Cowan and the Friels decided on the awards. The award recipients were: First Place – Earnie Burapan, store gift card; Second Place – Taylor Milner, store gift card; Third Place – Lauren Walker, pizza gift card; Fourth-Sixth Place – Elizabeth Taylor, MaKenna Bleier and Elise Wiza, music gift cards; Seventh–Ninth Place – Theresa Wittman, Lyndsey Keller and Emily Montz, chocolates; Tenth Place – Victoria Roesner, sewing patterns and flip flops to decorate.
