Career Day held at C-C’s Ninth Grade Academy
C-C ninth-graders had an opportunity to interact with professionals in fields they hope to one day love during a Career Day on February 14.
More than 40 professionals spent time discussing their jobs and career paths with students during the sixth annual Ninth Grade Academy Career Day. Fields such as skilled trades, engineering, information technology, business and health services were represented. Students visited four different sets of panelists during a three-hour timeframe.
The panelists gave job descriptions, spoke about education requirements, suggested activities to participate in while still in school and, in some cases, brought items with them such as blueprints and fun experiments.
“One of the coolest things you can do in the next four years if you want to get into information technology is to get involved with the robotics team,” said Lee Drake, CEO of OS-Cubed, Inc. “You’ll be exposed to so many different facets of the field.”
Al Arilotta, an architect at ALA Architects, reinforced the importance of setting yourself up for success beginning in ninth grade, rather than fumbling along.
Students had questions for the professionals and didn’t shy away from the tough subjects, like possible career regrets. When the panelists in one of the Engineering and Technology rooms were asked about regrets, they were met with honest answers from each.
“Working in my field, I sometimes see myself as part of the problem. No matter how big we build a highway, there will always be more cars, buses and trucks,” said Christopher Sheridan, a civil engineer with the Department of Transportation. “I love my job and what I do but looking back I wish I would have looked more into renewable energy.”
“You may go through similar feelings during your careers as well,” Sheridan added.
The event is coordinated by the Monroe County School Business Partnership, Senior High School Career Center, Ninth Grade Academy staff, community members and alumni.
