Students at Quest Elementary School in Hilton had the pleasure of seeing a fencing demonstration thanks to fellow student, Alex Pickering, who is taking lessons at the Rochester Fencing Club. Alex, age 11, a student in Brenda Carpenter’s class, attended the Imagine RIT Innovation and Creativity Festival last year where he became interested in fencing after seeing a demonstration.
Alex’s mom, Nancy Pickering, a Hilton Board of Education member, took him to Rochester Fencing Club where he learned about the three weapons – Foil, Sabre and Epee. He now trains using the Sabre and said he likes the mental challenge, using stragegy and agility aspects of the sport.
Christine Griffith, Sabre coach, Semion Kiriakidi, Foil and Sabre coach, and David Taylor, Foil coach, demonstrated the sport and even included Alex in a match.
