College at Brockport students volunteer in Brockport during annual day of service
Saturday, August 23 was the fifth Annual Day of Service, a cooperative venture between the College at Brockport and 50 community organizations, agencies, churches, libraries, parks, and other entities in the Greater Rochester area, including the Village of Brockport. The mandatory event for all 2,000 freshmen (and transfer students) is an opportunity for them to complete approximately two hours of community service before their classes begin this semester.
About 40-50 students wearing bright yellow shirts and supervised by upper classmen edged, weeded, raked, mulched, painted, pushed wheelbarrows, and dragged tarps holding wooden chips at Corbett Park, and painted parking barriers and posts at Monika’s Children’s Park. The Day of Service was organized by Richard Harris, coordinator of Services and Community Building, College at Brockport, and coordinated with Linda Ketchum, vice-chair of the Village of Brockport’s Parks Committee. Thanks go to Brockport’s Department of Public Works, and Bill and Joyce Connors for use of their yard equipment. Volunteers Jane Spalla, Joe Blosenhauer, Dave Bannister, and Lucian Price took part as did Parks Committee members Sandi Henschel, Hanny Heyen, Linda Ketchum, Losh Spalla, and Kristin Stiles, who oversaw the projects in the parks.
