Empty Bowls raise funds for hunger outreach
Hilton School District’s Elementary Art Department will be hosting the Second Annual Empty Bowls Open House and Dinner on Wednesday, March 18 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Northwood Elementary School, 433 North Greece Road. Last year’s event raised over $1,800 to fight local and global hunger.
Students at all three Hilton elementary schools create bowls that are then displayed the night of the event. For $5, each guest receives a handcrafted bowl of their choice and a simple meal of soup and bread. The bowl serves as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world.
This year, the event is being organized by Laurie Steele-Sperber, Northwood art teacher, who was able to obtain bowls from Libbey Inc. when it closed the Syracuse China factory in 2009, ending 138 years of pottery making in the Syracuse area. “The unglazed bowls are perfect for the students to paint,” said Steele-Sperber.
