Ceremony marks Memorial Day
The entire Oliver Middle School student population filed out of the building and gathered on the front lawns on the morning of May 22 to mark Memorial Day and honor all those who have given their lives in the service of the country. They were joined by special guests – active duty serviceman Matthew Prest and local veterans Ron Ayrault, Sharon Chaplain, John Commins, Bob Currier, Dick Griswold, James Kenney, Tony Rios, Ken Wardwell, Rich Wiest and Dave Yeaw.
Students from grades six and seven read the names of Brockport natives who have died in combat, from the Civil War to WWI and II, Korea, Vietnam, and the Global War on Terror. It was a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by so many to ensure freedom. Student readers were: Jonahs Chadsey, Sydney Collini, Devin DiPasquale, Nathan Dones, Greg Flemming, Paige Legault, Zack Losee, Channing Owens, Will Scharf, Kai Schedel, and Alyvia Witherite. Student Joey Volpe read the poem “The Soldier.”
After the laying of a wreath at the base of the flagpole, the flag was raised, and then lowered to half-mast by Margaret Hansen, Joey LoMonaco and Nate Riexinger. Buglers Ryan Billington, Nik White and Mikayla Zarr played “Taps.”
