Merton Williams students seeking donations for LIMBS International

Throughout the developing world there are an estimated 40 million amputees and only five percent of them have access to any type of prosthetic limb system. Students at Merton Williams Middle School are working to change that.

On September 30, all students and staff will participate in a Community and Service Learning Activity as part of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. Seventh graders will engage in activities to raise awareness about the struggles people without limbs face every day. For example, they will put on a shirt or tie a shoelace by using only one hand.

The eighth graders have started a fund- raising campaign to help LIMBS International give amputees around the world a second chance at life by providing them with a LIMBS leg system. The prosthetics are high-quality and cost less than the average cell phone. Students and staff hope to raise $900 by collecting pledges and participating in a walk-a-thon during the fundraising event. The $900 will allow the school to provide three people with new legs.
