Brockport CSD celebrates 10th annual Walk to School

Brockport Central School District will celebrate its 10th year participating in International Walk to School Day. Parents and children are encouraged to walk or ride their bikes or scooters to school on October 7.

The annual event occurs in more than 40 countries and promotes physical activity, safety, community involvement and concern for the environment. Local sponsorship is provided by the Walk to School Subcommittee of Walk! Bike! Brockport!

Families wishing to participate but live too far away to walk to school may park and walk from Rite Aid (corner of Main Street and West Avenue) or Bill Gray’s.

Community volunteers wearing bright yellow vests will greet and encourage the students at all intersections between the two drop off zones and the schools. Student athletes from The College at Brockport will also accompany the students walking from the drop off zones to provide support and cheer them on.

This year, Tim Hortons will supply free coffee for adults. Brockport Kiwanis Club members will staff the coffee tent, located on the campus road between the Hill School entrance and the Barclay School. Walkers can also enjoy apples donated from Kalir Farm, available at the coffee tent, as well as both drop off zones, beginning at 8 a.m. (while supplies last). The high school rock band, “Flip Side,” will perform near the coffee tent.

The Walk to School Day trophy will go to the school with the highest percentage of walkers. The event will occur rain or shine; however parents should use their judgment in the event of inclement weather.
