Spencerport schools receive NYSSBA Be the Change Award

The New York State School Boards Association selected Spencerport Central School District as one of only three districts statewide with the 2015 Be the Change for Kids Innovation Award. The award, announced during a press conference on September 29, recognizes Spencerport for its 21st Century Technology Team initiative.

The 21st Century Technology Team provides staff development for teachers, as well as direct instruction to students utilizing a blended learning model. Reaching all students in grades K-5, this collaborative effort has provided consistent and equitable experiences utilizing 21st Century technology in all elementary classrooms within the school district.

Representing Spencerport at the ceremony at SUNY Poly included teachers and administrators: Elissa Kingsbury, Telcie Pincelli, Cory Allen, Lisa McCarthy, and Ty Zinkiewich; along with Board President William Sweeney.

The Be the Change for Kids initiative launched in January of 2010 to set awareness of the funding crisis facing New York’s public education system, and to encourage school leaders to consider ways to optimize resources and embrace new methods of teaching and learning.

Fundamental changes in financing education, spending priorities, incentives and performance measures were needed to ensure all New York’s public education students have equal opportunity for success.

Three guiding principles steer the Be the Change for Kids initiative:
•Provide a globally-competitive education at an affordable cost
•Improve efficiencies without sacrificing quality
•Embrace change when it leads to better opportunities and success for students.
