Veterans speak to eighth-graders for Take A Vet to School Day

Brockport Central School District partnered with Sen. Joe Robach, Time Warner Cable and the History Channel to participate in “Take a Vet to School Day,” a national initiative that connects veterans with young people. Veterans from different branches of the military shared their experiences in the armed forces with eighth-graders at Brockport Oliver Middle School on November 13.

Dick Griswold represented the Navy; Sharon Chaplain the Air Force and Brockport High School graduate and board trustee Gerry Maar represented the Army. The veterans spoke about their time in the service and shared stories that impacted their lives.

“It is because of our veterans that Americans have the privilege to choose their career, pursue an education and enjoy the many basic freedoms that so many take for granted every day,” said Sen. Joe Robach. “There is no more important way to learn about our history than by hearing the firsthand accounts of the brave individuals who serve. Students at Brockport Oliver Middle School had that opportunity. I applaud the veterans who participated in this event and I am confident that their stories will have a lasting impact on these students in a very positive way.”
