Quest students celebrate an authentic Thanksgiving

A trip to the creek behind Quest Elementary School in Hilton on November 20 for the annual Quest Feast was like traveling back to the 1600s. The chilly temperatures didn’t stop students from demonstrating what life was like back then for the Pilgrims and Native Americans. Displays included the Iroquois government, maple syrup production, animal traps, Pilgrim language, banana bread baking, American Indian food, wigwams, hunting and fishing, weather  and games.

Cameron Ryan, a student in Paige Langswager’s class, challenged classes to put down the most sticks to build a teepee. “The teepee is like one of the first mobile homes, but made with sticks and lashings,” he said. Cameron added that he chose the project because of his interest in how Indians lived back then and that he worked two to three weeks on his project.

The event, involving all students in the school, culminates with an authentic Thanksgiving dinner served in the warmth of the cafeteria and gymnasium. Parents volunteer to help serve.
