C-C seniors recognized with National Merit Scholarship commendations

Churchville-Chili High School seniors Samuel L. Hunt and Angelina F. Wezelis were named Commended Students in the 2017 National Merit® Scholarship Program.

Commended Students are honored for the exceptional academic promise demonstrated by outstanding performance on the qualifying test used for program entry. Hunt and Wezelis achieved scores in the top five percent of more than 1.6 million students from across the country that entered the 2017 competition.

The program recognizes the 50,000 highest scorers on the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Some 16,000 of them continue in the competition as Semifinalists. (Finalists will have an opportunity to compete for National Merit Scholarships). The other 34,000 high performers are honored with special Letters of Commendation.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is one of the most prestigious academic competitions for recognition and scholarships. It was established in 1955 and performance on the test has been used as a benchmark by colleges and scholarship organizations for decades.
