Record-breaking 670 Brockport students participate in Walk to School Day
A record-breaking 670 Brockport Central School District students joined thousands of students around the world as they walked, biked, skateboarded and scootered to school during International Walk to School Day on October 5. The event, organized locally by the Walk to School Subcommittee of Walk! Bike! Brockport!, promotes the benefits of physical activity.
Families who wished to participate but lived too far away had the opportunity to park and walk from Bill Gray’s or the Village Optician. Tents were set up at each location so students could pick up an apple (donated by Kalir Farm) and a special trinket of appreciation for their participation.
Student volunteers from the College at Brockport boys’ baseball team and girls’ basketball team accompanied the walkers and community volunteers were stationed at intersections to offer support and encouragement.
The event continued on the district campus with music provided by the high school band “Element 36”and free coffee for adult walkers, donated by Tim Hortons and distributed by the Kiwanis Club.
Brockport’s three elementary schools compete each year for the coveted Walk to School Day trophy, which is presented to the school with the highest percentage of participation. The Hill School won this year, with 47 percent participation of its eligible student body. Dr. James Goetz, the event organizer, presented the Hill School with the trophy during an assembly on October 11.
Barclay came in second, with 41 percent participation, followed closely by Ginther with 40 percent. Combined, 43 percent of Brockport’s elementary schools walked or biked to school that day.
This marked Brockport CSD’s 11th consecutive year participating in Walk to School Day.
