Brockport breaks district Walk to School Day participation record
A record-breaking 777 Brockport Central School District students joined thousands of students around the world as they walked, biked, skateboarded and scootered to school in recognition of International Walk to School Day on October 4. The event, organized locally by the Walk to School Subcommittee of Walk! Bike! Brockport!, promotes the benefits of a healthy lifestyle while encouraging safe walking and community engagement.
Organizers were thrilled to announce record-breaking participation this year with more than 100 new walkers. The three elementary schools, Ginther, Barclay and Hill, compete each year for the coveted Walk to School Day trophy, presented to the school with the highest percentage of participation. Barclay and Hill tied with 47 percent participation this year, so the trophy will spend half of the year at each school. Combined, 44 percent of Brockport’s elementary schools walked to school that day. Additionally, the number of participants from Oliver Middle School more than doubled from last year.
Families who wished to participate but lived too far away had the opportunity to park and walk from Bill Gray’s or Our Village Optician. Tents were set up at each location so students could pick up an apple donated by Kalir Farm and a special trinket of appreciation for their participation. Student athletes from The College at Brockport’s men’s baseball and women’s basketball teams accompanied the walkers and community volunteers were stationed at intersections to offer support and promote safe crossing.
The event continued on the district campus with music provided by the high school band “Element 36”and free coffee for adult walkers, donated by Tim Hortons and distributed by the Kiwanis Club.
This was Brockport CSD’s 12th consecutive year participating in Walk to School Day.
