GCC history students take part in Orleans County Heritage Festival
History buffs of all ages are invited to walk back and forth through time to meet a treasure trove of important historical figures from across three centuries. As part of the Third Annual Orleans County Heritage Festival, Genesee Community College’s History Club is sponsoring a Timeline Festival at Mount Albion Cemetery, 14925 Telegraph Road, Albion on Saturday, September 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Along the physical timeline, signs marking specific periods such as 1700, 1750, 1800 continuing on to today will indicate prominent events such as the Revolutionary War and Civil War. As participants walk along the timeline, moving forward or backward in time, they will encounter historical impressionists and reenactors who will engage audiences and potentially encourage a noteworthy exchange of interests, ideas and conversation.
Key figures from the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Civil War and numerous others are among the anticipated timeline guests. This year participants may meet Abigail Adams, the wife and closest advisor to John Adams, and mother to John Quincy Adams. Other notable impressionists may include President James K. Polk, President James Madison, President Abraham Lincoln and President Franklin D. Roosevelt. A strong contingent representing noted women in U.S. history will also be featured within the Timeline Festival. Along with Abigail Adams will be Edith Wilson, second wife of U.S. President Woodrow Wilson and Matilda Joslyn Gage, a 19th Century suffragist, abolitionist, author and ‘freethinker;’ among others.
Additionally, the Timeline Festival will feature three formal talks, including: Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant portrayed by Derek Maxfield at 11 a.m.; Abigail Adams portrayed by Melinda Grube at 1 p.m.; and Franklin D. Roosevelt portrayed by Albert McFadyen at 3 p.m.
The event is free, open to the public and will occur rain or shine outdoors, so dressing according to the outdoor elements is advised.
