Roc2Change Student Summit on Race co-hosted by Spencerport HS
High School students from across Monroe County united on Friday, March 29, for the eighth Roc2Change Student Summit on Race at the Floreano Riverside Convention Center.
Co-hosted by Spencerport High School, World of Inquiry School #58, and School of the Arts, the spring 2019 summit focused on the theme, “Decoding and Dismantling Structural Racism.” Students gained a shared understanding of the term, structural racism; how it differs from interpersonal racism; and how structural racism plays out, locally and nationally, in the following four areas: economics and employment; health and housing; education; and law enforcement.
More than 500 students from 35 area high schools attended the daylong summit, which encouraged dialogue about race through speakers, student-led activities and sessions. The summit also included time for students to collaborate on how to bring the Roc2Change progress and plans back to their respective schools and communities.
