Brockport teacher inducted into National Teachers Hall of Fame
Christopher Albrecht, a fourth grade teacher at Brockport’s Fred W. Hill School, is among the National Teachers Hall of Fame Class of 2019. The five members of the Class of 2019 have amassed a total of 132 years of classroom teaching, with Albrecht accounting for 23 of those years.
The new members traveled to Emporia, Kansas during the week of June 17 for four days worth of events leading up to their induction. Events included sharing expertise on fossilized shark’s teeth with the Emporia community, a trivia competition that pitted the inductee team against community teams, attending the Emporia Municipal Band concert, screening the documentary “Most Likely to Succeed” by Ted Dintersmith and a roundtable webinar. The induction ceremony was held on Friday, June 21. That day, the inductees also gathered at the National Memorial to Fallen Educators to remember educators and support personnel who died in the line of duty.
Albrecht was surprised with the news of his selection for the Hall of Fame during a presentation at the conclusion of the fourth-grade spelling bee back on March 20. It was Albrecht who started the spelling bee 19 years ago at the request of a student.
Throughout his career, Albrecht has received several awards, including: 2019 NEA Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence; 2018 New York State Teacher of the Year; 2017 NYS Board of Regents’ David Johnson Award and Donald Sobol Award; 2015 Campaign for Cursive National Teacher of the Year; and 1996 Sallie Mae First Class Teacher of the Year.
Albrecht believes that his job is to teach children, but his mission is to promote lifelong learning.
