Byron-Bergen student wins SUNY GCC STEAM Fair Grand Prize
Byron-Bergen sixth grade student Jackson Lundfelt garnered the Grand Prize at the Genesee Community College (GCC) Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) Fair this past March. His science project was chosen from more than sixty entries from over twenty districts.
Ed Levinstein and Katlyn Harloff of GCC’s Accelerated College Enrollment (ACE) program visited Byron-Bergen Elementary School on Monday, June 17, to deliver the news to Jackson and present him with his awards. Jackson’s father and sister joined Elementary School Principal Brian Meister and Assistant Principal Betsy Brown at the surprise ceremony.
Levinstein and Harloff presented Jackson with a silver medal for the Judges Impression Top Table Award and gold medals for Conservation and Ecology, Spectators Choice Award Top Table, Math Challenge Award, and the STEAM Fair Grand Prize of a brand new laptop computer.
Jackson designed his project out of concern for people without clean drinking water. He presented five methods of filtering water for consumption. Of the five methods, he found that evaporation and condensation created the best product. “Distilling the water left all the minerals and bacteria behind,” explained Jackson. “We reduced the ppm, parts per million, down to nineteen all the way from 1,500.”
“We are so proud of Jackson,” said Meister. “It is a positive reflection of what an exceptional student he is and our growing STEAM program.”
