Brockport CSD hosts Mock Newbery Club

The joy of reading recently united students from various school districts in a collaborative reading project called the Mock Newbery Club.

Thirty Brockport Hill School students were among 95 fifth graders selected to particpate in the club which is modeled after the American Library Association’s Newbery Medal program. The Newbery Award is awarded annually to the author of the most distinguished contribution to children’s American literature.

Students were selected to participate based on their willingness and ability to read various genres and partake in group discussions. They began reading five selected books and sharing their thoughts and reflections with each other periodically through Schoology, a learning management system. Upon finishing, each student voted for his or her favorite book. The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise by Dan Geminhart received the most student votes.

Club members from Hilton Village and TJ Connor schools joined Hill School students in the cafeteria for the grand unveiling celebration. Four additional schools from New Hampshire joined by video conference. This year’s American Library Association’s Newberry Medal winner was New Kid by Jerry Craft. Students celebrated with snacks and cupcakes.
