Parents, Board of Education members, administrators and staff gathered on December 7 at Hilton High School to honor the induction of 79 students into the Hilton Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS).
Advisors Dr. Carl Gaupp and Matthew Pietarinen welcomed attendees to the ceremony before Principal Dr. Jeff Green took the stage to thank parents, guardians and family members for their part in helping to mold the students being honored. “You, inductees, are going to be the difference makers of your generation. Making a difference is a lifelong pursuit that consists of countless daily decisions,” he told the inductees. “Please continue to embrace being the difference makers in our community.”
This year’s keynote speaker, selected by the students, was Mr. Ken Krause, math teacher. Krause read a quote by Theodore Roosevelt about how those who choose not to bear greatly will know no victory nor defeat. “It is now your turn and time to bear greatly. It is now your time to take risks in the real world and to learn to fail over and over again. For without failure, you will never succeed, and you will never be successful,” he told the inductees. “Don’t wait to bear greatly. Be the leaders who are willing to put it all out there and repeatedly fail so that one day, you can find great success.”
National Honor Society officers – President Gabrielle Hix, Vice President Sydney Heise, Secretary Samantha Fisher, and Treasurer Meredith French – reviewed the four pillars of membership, which are scholarship, service, leadership and character.
Each inductee was called up on stage to have a parent place an NHS pin on their lapel and to sign the registry. Students then lit a candle and together recited the NHS oath.
