Leaving a job she loved as a marketing specialist for a law firm was a decision SUNY Brockport alum Alyssa Gray (Class of 2018) never thought she would make. When she stumbled across a job posting for the Supreme Court for the United States, she knew she had to take her shot.
When Gray moved to Washington, D.C., for a job out of college, she dreamed that it would lead to work in government, knowing a job at a law firm could help pave the way. She originally thought her application for the Communications Associate for the Supreme Court was a long shot.
The position combined two of her biggest passions – telling stories and government. She discovered those passions at SUNY Brockport, where she sharpened her skills studying multimedia journalism with a minor in political science. She then earned a Master’s in Public Relations from Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications.
As a Communications Associate, Gray primarily focuses her time on media coverage through social media channels. She compiles content posted in relation to the Supreme Court from various correspondents and media outlets.
Gray describes the workplace as constantly evolving and fast paced, which is the type of work she prefers. The Supreme Court employs more than 500 people, of which she works on a team of seven.
Gray capitalized on her time as a student earning valuable experience. She regularly reviewed resumes, cover letters, and other writing samples at the Academic Success Center. She also helped start the Brockport Beat and eventually oversaw the Newhouse Insider at Syracuse. She later landed an internship with the American Cancer Society where she compiled numerous stories on cancer survivors and promoted events and fundraisers.
Despite entering college with ambitions of going pre-med, Gray is appreciative of the transition in her academic journey. She credits countless faculty members from the Department of Journalism, Broadcasting, and Public Relations for assisting and developing her love of storytelling and the art of communication.
