SUNY Brockport hosting RCSD students for learning academy

The MLK Boys Academy, consisting of boys in grades 3 – 6 from the Rochester City School District (RCSD), will take part in lessons with SUNY Brockport professors to help them envision what it might be like to graduate high school and attend college.

The MLK Boys Academy started in 2010 to hold boys in the RCSD to a high standard while expanding educational topics to include life skills, conflict resolution, and how to be a leader. Each cohort of academy graduates has routinely exceeded a high school graduation rate of 90%.

The Academy will visit the SUNY Brockport campus every Monday through Friday from July 16 through August 7, 2024. The students get a feel for what it is like to attend college by touring the campus, eating in the dining hall, using the athletic facilities, and taking part in lesson plans taught by SUNY Brockport professors. The lessons are dispersed throughout the timeframe and involve engaging activities – from broadcasting and computer science to environment science, nursing and more – that utilize the University’s academic facilities and equipment.
