Churchville 11-year-old Zachary Dean punched and kicked his way to gold and silver medals at the 2013 Junior Olympics for Karate in Detroit, Michigan on August 1. The gold medal came in Kata, which is the solo, choreographed recital of karate moves. He also received silver medals in Sparring and in Weapons. Kata is Zachary’s favorite division to compete in. Zachary also traveled to Cincinnati, Ohio in June to compete in the AAU Karate Nationals, then in July he traveled to Akron, Ohio to compete in the I.W.K.A. World Championships, where he brought home a trophy for Kata and Weapons.
